Happy Grandparents Day

When is Grandparents Day?

National Grandparents Day in the US falls on the Sunday after Labor Day. It is time to do something grand!

Do you have any special Grandparents Day crafts planned, or traditions in your family to honor grandparents? Many schools host special Grandparents Day lunches or parties, where grandmothers and grandfathers can join their grandchildren in the classroom for activities.

Grandparents Day gifts are nice, but sometimes the most meaningful way to show you care is by simply spending time together. Not everyone is blessed to have grandparents in their lives, but you can still make the holiday special! One wonderful way to honor our elders is to visit a nursing home and spend some time with senior citizens there.

When did Grandparents Day become a holiday?

People often wonder if Grandparents Day is a real holiday, and the answer is yes! In fact, people all around the world celebrate their grandma and grandpa with holidays. In America, it isn’t formalized as a federal holiday, but it is recognized as a secular holiday.

Celebrating grandparents became a national holiday in the US in 1978, when President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation that the Sunday after Labor Day would be dedicated “…to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.”

I just love the sentiments and meaning behind this holiday. Grandparents are precious and can really add a lot of wisdom and love to the lives of our youngest family members.

  1. Yes, our grandpa is decreased and sending this would cause more pain than joy. I searched and there don’t seem to be anything like it out there so hopefully Grandma can get one next year.

  2. I am working on this. I intended to make one but it just wasn’t ready in time. I will update the post asap.
